Konexión ERG Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Nov 2, 2021 2 min read

A cornerstone of KLA’s inclusion and diversity strategy is our employee resource groups (ERGs). ERGs are a collective of colleagues who join together to promote awareness, respect and inclusion in our workplace. Our ERGs provide opportunities to get together to celebrate cultural histories, traditions and achievements, and Hispanic Heritage Month gave our employees a chance to do just that.

In the U.S., Hispanic Heritage Month was created to honor the achievements of Hispanic people. The observation started as Hispanic Heritage Week but was later expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day span, Sept. 15 – Oct. 15.

Konexión, KLA’s Latinx employee resource group, held a virtual event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. This year, KLA Research Scientist and Manager Edgardo García-Berríos presented the history of Puerto Rico to fellow KLA employees. Starting from the pre-colonial period to today, he covered how history has influenced Puerto Rican people, music, and cuisine with cooking demos of some of his favorite dishes.

Most of his recipes called for plantains, a close relative of the banana. The delicious demos included staples such as mofongo, maduros and tostones.

“What I enjoy most about being part of Konexión is working with other KLA employees to educate those who seek information about the Latinx community.” – Edgardo García-Berríos

Konexión’s mission is to foster an inclusive community where employees can interact and innovate together through cultural sharing and understanding of the diversity of the Latinx community. In addition to heritage celebrations, Konexión and KLA Foundation partner with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley to support STEM education programming for Latinx students.
